Piazza San Pietro

One of the world’s great public spaces, the piazza was laid out by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667 under the direction of Pope Alexander VII.

Seen from above, it appears like a big keyhole with two semicircular colonnades, each consisting of four rows of Doric columns.

The elliptical centre of the piazza, which contrasts with the trapezoidal entrance, encloses the visitor with “the maternal arms of Mother Church” in Bernini’s expression.

At the center of the square stands an Egyptian obelisk of red granite, 25.5 meters high. It was brought to Rome by Caligula from Heliopolis in Egypt and moved to its current site in 1586 by the engineer-architect Domenico Fontana.

In addition, a granite fountain constructed by Bernini in 1675 matches another fountain designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613.

When the Pope is in Rome, crowds gather in St. Peter’s square at noon on Sunday to hear the Angelus. On Wednesday mornings he holds a general audience in the square.
