Ara Pacis

Ara Pacis is one of the most significant monuments of ancient Rome.

It celebrates the peace created throughout the Mediterranean by Emperor Augustus after his victorious campaigns in Gaul and Spain.

The monument was commissioned by the Senate in 13 BC and completed four years later.

It consists of a traditional open-air altar at its center surrounded by precinct walls which are pierced on the eastern and western ends by openings.

The vast marble altar is covered with detailed reliefs, one showing Augustus with his family.

The altar reflects the Augustan vision of Roman civil religion.

The altar is now housed in a new cover building, a giant glass cube, designed by American architect Richard Meier.
