Piramide di Cestius

Description

The Pyramid of Cestius is an ancient pyramid  near the Porta San Paolo and the Protestant Cemetery.

Incorporated in the Aurelian walls is the tomb of Caio Cestio, a rich roman magistrate who died in 12 BC.

The pyramid is 36,40 meters (118 ft) high and entirely covered with white marble, while its base is of travertine marble. In the back it is a non-catholic cemetery dating back to the XVIII century. Here you can find the tombs of the English poets John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Due to its incorporation into the city’s fortifications, it is today one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in Rome.

In 2001, the pyramid’s entrance and interior underwent restoration. In 2011, further work was announced to clean and restore the pyramid’s badly damaged marble cladding.
