Pantheon

Description

The Pantheon is the best preserved Ancient Roman monument.

Marco Agrippa built it between 27 and 25 BC to celebrate his victory against the Persians.

The original rectangular shape was modified after two fires when Hadrian rebuilt it into a circular shape in AD 125. Hadrian’s temple was dedicated to the classic Gods but in AD 608 it was consecrated as a Christian church in honor of the Madonna and all martyrs.

The building is circular with a portico of large granite Corinthian columns.

The most fascinating part of the Pantheon is its giant dome, with its famous hole in the top, the eye of the Pantheon or oculus (It is still today the largest non-reinforced dome ever built).  Light enters through the central oculus, which served as a symbolic connection between the temple and the Gods.

Today you will find the tomb of the artist Raphael here, alongside those of kings Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I.
