The Fontana di Trevi is the most famous and beautiful fountain of Rome.
Standing 26.3 meters (86 ft) high and 49.15 meters (161.3 ft) wide, it is the largest, baroque fountain in the city.
Commissioned by Clement XII, the fountain was designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed in 1762 when Pietro Bracci’s Oceanus was set in the central niche. It depicts Neptune’s chariot being led by the Tritons with sea horses, one wild, one docile representing the moods of the sea. The water still comes from the aqua virgo, an underground aqueduct that is over 2000 years old.
The name Trevi refers to the three roads that converge at the fountain.
The famous tradition is to toss a coin into the fountain thus ensuring your return to the eternal city.
Around 3000€ are thrown into the Trevi Fountain each day.
The fountain has appeared in several notable films, including Federico Fellini‘s La Dolce Vita.
